Anti-Salvia propaganda
« on: November 27, 2005, 03:03:11 AM »
I saw a short bit about Salvia on the news tonight. I never watch the news, so I don't know if there have been other mentions of it on other stations' news or not, but this story had the sound of a first-time story.

Nothing out of the ordinary as far as anti-salvia propaganda goes: called it dangerous, compared its effects to LSD, said it is available in local shops, mentioned that it is on the DEA watchlist and said police officers were concerned about it. They showed a one-question interview with a user who was asked about doing things while on salvia, who explained that one would not be able to safely drive a car whilst under the influence. Makes me wonder if there was more to that interview that wasn't shown.

And, of course, it came directly after the story about meth.

I just got a horrified look on my face while watching it, because I've never heard about salvia being mentioned on the news in my area. So now, surely lots more people in the Portland area have a very limited amount of biased knowledge about salvia. Just makes me angry.

yeah...

It's really sad, but this is a battle that can't really be won... taking action and lobbying/educating on salvia would just make it MORE watched, and probably speed up the process... yet... trying to keep it low-key is just giving The Man that much more dominion over 'educating' the public about it :(

Way I see it, Sally looks a lot like coleus, and since I have so many different kinds of plants around my place at any given time, I am willing to bet that if sally was made illegal to grow, that the pigs would not know which is which.  I know of people who grow our other green friend right out in the blatant open without anyone noticing what it is. (mind you they are mutants, but still)  It is a sad day indeed that the government has so much power over the pions.  Wish people would come together and stand up, but then again that is asking too much I guess.

People who say it cannot be done should not interrupt those who are doing it.

Since I saw that news article, two people who know nothing about Salvia have mentioned it in conversation, one of whom didn't know the name. I feel decidedly uncomfortable about this.

That really is too bad, as she is my best ally.  Oh well, just will have to go underground I guess.  This seems to be sweeping the nation, if anyone has any good ideas on how to stop it be my guest I am all ears.  To me, it seems like die if you do or die if ya don't, but I sure as heck won't give up the fight until my death.

It continues to get better.

I heard a show on a co-worker's radio talking about Salvia. Apparently, when this radio show got wind of Salvia in the last few days, they decided to stage a typical radio stunt.

Apparently they contacted the DEA (on or off air, I don't know) to make sure it was legal. When they found out it is, they bought some, brought it into the studio, and I think 2 people from the show smoked it on air. Both reported no results.

After this, it seems local listeners were outraged, claiming the show was acting irresponsibly by encouraging the use of Salvia. The people on the show said, basically, "So what, it doesn't do a damned thing anyway." And now they seem to use Salvia as a joke, as in "Oh, that terrible Salvia stuff..."

Here's the website for the radio show: http://www.radioplayhouse.com/

I don't know either how to stop it, but I can't accept that attitude. We shouldn't just say "Oh well, if it becomes illegal I'll just break the law and do it anyway." As responsible users of a useful tool/ally, we shouldn't be complacent about seeing that taken away from us.

I did not mean that I would become complacent, if you look in this forum, you will see that I am not that way.  As to it being legal according to white man's law, I do not follow those laws if they are not in accordance with nature's.  Don't get me wrong, I am into laws to protect the people, but I see no sense in banning such plants, just because someone abuses them. The Great Spirit did not put these plants on this Earth just because he had an itch.   I do not condone these plants for use as a party drug or to "see what they can do" as many people do and I have been using this plant for medicinal uses and "seeing" for almost nine years now. I too do not want this plant scheduled, but if it does, I will not stop just because some ignorant person told me I should.  If I did that I would not have gotten this far in my life, or become the person I am today or debating this on this forum right now.  I did not mean to come across as a person who breaks the law just because they want to try and get away with it, or a person who is a non-activist.  Problem is that too many people are ignorant and prefer to stay that way, you can take the horse to water, but only the horse will drink if it wants to.  The trick is making the horse want to drink.  Anyone who can do that for the right reasons would always get my sainthood nomination if I was catholic.

this is one of those questions where I can take both sides of the argument.........( I just erased all my discussions of both sides...too confusing)

instead I'll just mention what happened to the Classic Green Helper when the law clamped down on the growers and breeders.....they got smarter and the plant got BETTER and STRONGER,(haha imagine stronger salvia, perhaps a different molecular" flavor" instead?) and folks banded together, and started to push for change.  Today, even though its still illegal, things are much better than in the early 80's.....in some California counties, you can grow for personal medicinal use, as long as you don't go overboard .  The rise of Meth and  large commercial farms in the National Parks etc. I think has made law enforement realize what a waist of time it is to  chase Mom and Pop growers around.......but I  am digressing...

Education and De-Criminalization are the correct path I think, for all substances.

I realize this is kind of maybe an outdated response!!  But, You can go onto other discussions and pull me up, I'm a fighter for this and am trying to form a consensus.  I am in California but I will go wherever I need to if I know I won't be let down.  Lets all get together and be heard...  I am ready willing and able.  I love my Salvia
