SPF Chat / Chat Rocks My World
« on: January 19, 2005, 06:06:31 AM »
What i like best about chat is how one can participate in several conversations at the same time and even go and make a cup of tea and return to read (scroll up) where the discussion is up to. Unlike actual speech several people can talk at once and one can have private conversations in separate boxes or be in several chat channels at the same time.
The spiritplant's chatroom is very variable and i like it best when its witty and funny and bright.
We do get into some interesting threads there and the place is inhabited by the entheogeeks so computing is always a hot topic.  There's usually someone to help with any computer issue a chatter might have.
Spiritplants people would see some familiar names there, headed up by Nitroburn, who kindly donnated the server for chat a couple of years back (was it that long ago?). Many of the moderators from spf come to chat with varying regularity.  I am there a lot, as is Bush(Khronus), Cenny and JRL. There are also some unfamiliar people in chat, who only rarely post at the forums but are/were nevertheless spf members.
I was so hoping that the chatroom would receive a boost of new energy now that Nitro fixed the link which was for so long broken at spf.

Yes, jiku moderated the cactus cultivation forum and I moderated the indentification forum. I was totally reliant on MS Smith, to whom i offered the moderators job at the time; which he declined. Although i have a lovely collection of cacti, which i have grown for 25 years the taxonomy is still a mystery.

I have a 7yr old black, white and tan corgi-x called yoda coz she has ears like yoda from starwars.  She's not quite the wisest being in the universe but she is very clever for a dog and takes me for a walk everyday.
What about a gallery for our pet pics?

I don't want eddy running the show anymore either but i do want the archives back and, if possible, the name spiritplants.com to be returned to the community which made it what it is/was. That's the only reason i am waiting on eddy ... that, and i'd like an explanation from him.

Good point; i agree.  We could certainly hold the discussion on the forum and that would allow everyone to have a say who wanted to, then draw consensus from that in the same way one does irl .... finding the points of agreement and working thru points of disagreement.

I would like to give eddy until the end of this week to turn up before i start making serious efforts... although i dont see why we cant start up the full forum and copy and paste to spf if it returns.
I am still aghast ... scarcely believing we wont get the whole of the spf archive back in the public domain.

The Long House / Pick New Zealand

Just a quick shout out to all of you who have ever thought New Zealand is a nice place to visit but would need to work here to be able to afford the trip.
We currently need 24,000 workers to pick fruit in Hawkes Bay; the season begins on Feb 10th.
I dont know too much about it myself but here is a site with all the details.

The Site / where's eddy?

I spoke to Eddy in the chatroom on December 15th when he said he would be away for a month.  That month is almost over and i am half expecting him back any day.
If he returns we will have spiritplants.com back online but there have to some changes, so that this can never happen again.
If he doesn't return , i suggest we buy the domain name (in July) - Nitroburn has already expressed an interest in acquiring it and hosting it himself, which would certainly suit me.  We could stay here until then ??

After some discussions with JRL, Cenacle and Bush i am liking the idea of an admin team which makes decisions by consensus and one or two technical people who have the keys to the website and enact these decisions.
I think its is preferable to have as the key-holders people who are 100% tried and true. Everyone is happy for nitroburn to be a key-holder and if Troutmask feels competent to be #2, i think he's our man.  Our kind host, Andy@yage is also apropriate and if we had these 3 as key-holders we'd be in good hands.
Where decisions on contoversial issues were needed a meeting of the admin team would be called (at nitro's chat server). The suggestion mooted is that the team would consist of  ex-moderators from spf and also long-standing and active members who were keen to be involved. (there would need to be a maximum number agreed on for effectiveness).

At present i am still in a state of dismay - to think that the archive is lost ...

 :(

When i spoke to eddy last he said he would give nitroburn the keys to spf but he disappeared without doing so ... damnit!
He thinks the missing pics are still there somewhere and seemed happy for nitro to have a go at finding them all.
anyways .. for now i am still waiting and missing the old place a lot but i am so pleased that we have this home to be in for now...
many thanks andy!

Yes, it would be lovely to see you in the chatroom.
Its a good idea to download a client:  www.mirc.com has one and there's also xchat but i dunno where to find it.
When you have a client the chat is at nitro.bctel.org : port 6667
If you have any problems maybe a geek will help sort it out.
