On this week's show:

* Featured New Rock Album: The Shins, *The Worm's Heart* (2018) . . . A "flipped" version of last year's LP, *Heartworms* . . . this meaning Shin mastermind James Mercer took the songs on that album, sped up the slow ones, slowed down the fast ones, played around with them . . . the result being what he calls an "alternate version, opposite version" . . . strange conceptual trickery aside, it's a really good album, warm & weird & sweetly odd in a Shins-y way . . . stands well as a companion, or on its own solidly . . .

* Featured Classic Rock Album: Crooked Still, *Shaken By a Low Sound* (2006) . . . This progressive Americana bluegrass band began in Boston, when its original members met at the New England Conservator of Music . . . this, their second LP, rivals the best contemporary Americana bands, such as Old Crow Medicine Show, Gillian Welch & David Rawlings, Alison Krauss & Union Station, & the few others that are as good . . . amazing, inspired, beautiful playing & singing. . .

* Storybook Time*: Continuing Chapter 14 of *The Unconsoled* by Kasuo Ishiguro . . .

* Readings from *Many Musics*, *Bags End News*, & *Labyrinthine* . . .  & this week's featured artists are more of those featured on the first "Casey's Top 40 with Casey Kasem," back on 21.January.1989 . . . winter passing rough & pretty, moody Beast, deep heart's fine shadowy truths . . .

buried under snow
cold weather?
may we all be safe, healthy
with a little tea for comfort
out here, it's still bike-riding time
skies are big and blue
chilled cheeks and gloveless fingers
cheers and best wishes to all

On this week's show:

* Featured New Rock Album: Bob Seger, *I Knew You When* (2017) . . . The old time rock-&-roller returns pretty quickly with a new album . . . rocks, rolls, some deep darkness, a little light . . . some cool cover tunes like Lou Reed's "Busload of Faith" & Leonard Cohen's "Democracy" . . . some say, or used to say, that rock & roll is a young person's game, but some, like Seger, prove this foolishness . . .

* Featured Classic Rock Album: R.E.M., *Reckoning* (1984) . . . Second LP from one of the greatest rock bands ever, & they just didn't stop writing great songs for a second in those heady early days . . . while the country was going to hell, again, & most pop music was fake saxophone synthesizer crap, these boys were blowing out their speakers with psychedelic sugar nuggets . . . wow! so good . . . listen over & over . . . it gets better . . .

* Storybook Time*: Continuing Chapter 14 of *The Unconsoled* by Kasuo Ishiguro . . .

* Readings from *Many Musics*, *Bags End News*, & *Labyrinthine* . . .  & this week's featured artists are some of those featured on the first "Casey's Top 40 with Casey Kasem," back on 21.January.1989 . . . into a new year with what's passing & what's possible, & what new mysteries await . . .

So albums of the year is not my thing, I stopped keeping up a long time ago, but some new CDs Im digging by my favorite guitar player John Scofield get as lot of play. One is Piety Street. Sco had been thinking of a blues record but decided to do a gospel one instead. Did it with some great New Orleans musicians and singers. His latest (I think) is called Country for Old Men. He usses various country tunes as jumping of points for some great blowing.
