New Rock Album: Lindsey Buckingham, Gift of Screws* (2008)...last heard on the 11/4/06 broadcast of this program with his excellent acoustic-leaning *Under the Skin* release, the sometime Fleetwood Mac guitar hero is back, rocking harder this time out, still twisting up that deep thinking mind of his into lyrics sometimes furious, sometimes beautifully subtle...as much as the Mac is missed, Buckingham is continuing to make and release records on his own that are highly vibrant and worth many listens...

Classic Rock Album: Traffic, *Welcome to the Canteen* (1971)...the seminal psychedelic rock band caught live on tour in the UK in 1971, featuring the last appearances of Dave Mason before his final break with the band...some Traffic songs, some Mason solo work, and even an oldie from Steve Winwood's time with the Spencer Davis Group...it's coherent, lovely, rocks, runs far in...Traffic at a strange moment of transition in its too-short career...

Storybook Time: Chapter Twenty-five of *Breaking Open the Head: A Psychedelic Journey into the Heart of Contemporary Shamanism* by Daniel Pinchbeck...

Readings from *Labyrinthine* fixtion & *Many Musics* poems...& this week's featured artist is Fifty Foot Hose, another obscure San Francisco band from the late '60s, cuts from their sole album, the 1968 jazzy/electronic treat *Cauldron*...well, the damned election is creeping closer and closer, could it be only a month away? Hoping the beauty and talent portion of the contest is over and that soon the grownups will be again in charge of the castle...Portland is getting grey and cool, it will be good to launch all sorts of fine music and crazy words from its environs!

Classic Rock Album: War, *The World is a Ghetto* (1972)...one of the finest albums from this seminal '70s funk band...like the best work of Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye of the same period, this album taps into the frustration and yearning of raging city days and nights, turns ache and hope into deeply grooving music...exciting musicians at work here...

New Rock Album: Travis, *Ode to J. Smith* (2008)...Travis last appeared on this program on the 2/28/04 broadcast with their excellent *12 Memories*. While their 2007 album was a sub-par effort, their new one is very fine. A work that powers through on songs worth their music and lyrics. The band notes that "the album is called *Ode to J. Smith* partly giving a heads up to the key song and partly because all the songs are written about nameless characters or to nameless characters"...

Classic Rock Album: R.E.M., *Out of Time* (1991)...Coming of age in the '80s rather than the '60s, the closest I could come to waiting for new Beatles records was waiting for new R.E.M. records...I was lucky that the '80s and '90s was this Georgia band's heyday...this album shows their countless strengths with electric and acoustic music, gorgeous harmonies, guest vocals and those awesome lyrics by Michael Stipe...great music like this is always of its time and out of time too....

Readings from *Labyrinthine* fixtion & *Many Musics* poems...& this week's featured artist is the Greek psychedelic band Aphrodite's Child, and cuts from their 1972 double-LP visionary epic, *666 (The Apocalypse of John, 13/18)*...this is the seventh consecutive weekend broadcast, and I've been loving this run every high and low of it...next weekend a break before the pre-Election Day broadcast!
