I turn it off at night when I'm done with it. Is that what you mean? I have a UPS and multiple surge protectors. I've had lightning hit and no problem though an unprotected answering machine got fried. Don't know about a direct hit, might be nothing you can do about that.

I rarely ever power down or reboot, although doing so is required about every 3 weeks to purge the cache that builds up and slows down my iMac.

However, I do switch the modem to a disconnected state so that my machine is off the 'net when I am not actively browsing. No need to give the world any more chances at me than necessary.
