You could take a million different angles, what type of paper is it supposed to be?

A research paper, essay?

i'm in oklahoma. i'm looking into what is going on exactly with the cacti population around here. there are a few cacti species in the sw part of the state. i can do field research, lab work, or just write a 30 page paper.

I would think you would achieve the best results, by learning as much as you can from folks that have already studied this or similar things (the cacti of the whole region). Then do some supplemental research to augment other's findings. Otherwise you're likely to not be as exhaustive as someone who's a PHD in the field.

I would also try contacting a cactus club. But don't ask them 'where them buttons' =) j/k

Kudos to Neonfyr for using correct english. It is cactus conservation, cactus population, and so on. Hate to be a nerd but it's a common error.
