Hi from humid FL!

Recently I lost some pink-flowered globular cacti. Other variants had no problems, but on a particularly humid day, despite dry soil, both specimens of this particular variety started to mush. I pulled them and put them in a hot dry environment, but within 15 minutes the tops of the buttons had become totally infected. I cut the infected parts off, but couldn't save any aereoles, although the roots were intact.

Do the roots have any chance of regrowing? Not sure how this would work but I am curious. I've read of grafting roots as a scion, but is this anything but insanity?

At least they weren't my favorites ;)
