Now I have to admit that I've always been a skeptic about the predictive power of the Mayan Clander. Its like those horoscopes in the daily newspapers that just spew utterly ambiguous statements that anyone who is desperate enough to believe that there is some "bigger plan" that they're a part of, can fit to details of their own lives.

But the other day I came across and article called "2012 & Human Destiny" by Stanislav Grof, the famous psychiatrist and author - http://bit.ly/7OC4VG. For me we finally have an article that steers away from the silly fantasies that we see from "gurus" like Daniel Pinchbeck, and instead gives a rational and calculated argument of why we should believe that the predictions of great transformation in 2012 may be true. I was just wondering what you guy might think of this - here's an excerpt:

"THE END OF THE WORLD OR CONSCIOUSNESS REVOLUTION? Instead of predicting a physical destruction of the material world, the Mayan prophecy might refer to death and rebirth and a mass inner transformation of humanity. In order to explore this idea, we have to answer two important questions, First, how could ancient Mayans two thousand years ago predict what situation humanity would be facing in the twenty-first century? And second, are there any indications that modern society, more specifically the industrial civilization, is currently on the verge of a major psychospiritual transformation?..."

Thanks for the post, most appreciated !

There are many facets of this phenomena to be recognized and they all have an intriguing perspective on it that give a clearer idea of the situation based on different beliefs and structures and facts.

Thanks again , :)

On the other hand, 2012 might well come and go as every other year without any more or less calamity or enlightenment than any other. But I guess its more interesting to fantasize big about what's up ahead around the bend......

Be here now.....

And this differs from Daniel Pinchbeck how?

Pinchbeck is a literalist.

If we read 2012 as an archetypal or mythic expression of the inner journey and of inner transformation, the it firmly rests within the realm of myth. "2012" becomes a symbolic date, one not tied to any date of vagaries of astronomy. It can be read in the way that the more thoughtful read the Book of Revelations (when they read it at all). It isn't some future history of mankind's physical struggles; it is a visionary expression of mythic internal movement.

In a mythic interpretation of "2012," mankind (the equinox) becomes aligned with the universe (the galactic plain), and the macrocosm descends into the microcosm.

But myths aren't tied to "real" dates and occurrences. Astrology is a mythic art; it shouldn't be confused with an empirical science.

Pinchbeck (in my reading) so totally doesn't get this. I know he is very highly regarded in the "entheogenic community," but to me he seems almost singularly uninsightful. In his 2012 book he totally misses the boat on any metaphorical of mythic reading of human life, and he continually gets caught up in the surface of things (crop circles, Mayan astrology, etc.).

I have a hard time believing how literal the "entheogenic community" takes things like 2012. If any group should have insight into the internal, subjective aspect of experience, you would think it would be them. But the eschatology of the culture from which most of sprang runs deep, so people easily get swept up into the myth of the Savior, where some external event will come along an usher in an age of milk and honey. But shouldn't the "community" understand the false dualism inherent in this perspective?

One would think...

Thank you, (once again,) amom, for putting a complex concept into simple words.

I feel the same way about the topic at hand. Matter of fact, I just posted on this very topic the other day at pinchbeck's site. However, I failed to adequately explain my position as you have above, my friend.

Me too. I think a lot of the worlds problems come from taking metaphors literally.

Litteral or not there are some very intriguing habit changes we can all benefit from, which inspired much of the elements of this topic.

I studied a bit with Robert Sitler and he has a great stance on this subject, he actually works with the maya and to tell you the truth they dont really see it as we do or interpret it the same way, of course

Heres a link: http://www.robertsitler.com/

Peace to all!

Imo, there are a ton of people in the "entheogenic community" who are not grounded in the here and now. I know there was a day when it was an issue for me. However, chopping wood, carrying water or even just interacting with children is the cure, imo. That and/or a large hunk of black tourmaline tucked into a pocket....

Somebody came in Tony's bathroom window and stole $9000 worth of drums: true story!

I'll bet that worked better at grounding Tony than a hunk of tourmaline in his pocket, eh?
